Betting on the Football Spread
Football odds post looking something like this:
What you’re seeing here is Team then the Spread then the Vig.
Seattle +3.5 -110
Minnesota -3.5 -110
You read this example as: Minnesota is the favorite to win by 3.5 points. In order to win $100 you have to bet $110.
In football, the favorite team will have a negative sign “-” before their spread. That’s how many points oddsmakers think they’ll win by. You as a bettor have to determine if they’ll exceed expectations. In this case, will Minnesota win by more than 3.5 points?
The vig or vigorish is basically what it will cost you to play.
The vig is written with either a + or – sign and then a number. The most common vig you will see looks like this: -110. A vig of -110 means that in order to win $100, you have to bet $110. The vig is a ratio.
You read the vig first by identifying if the symbol is a minus or a plus.
– = in order to win $100 you have to bet #
+ = betting $100 wins you #
